Ofcom contradicts call for nationwide fibre
August 30th, 2008 by admin
Ofcom, the telecoms regulator has released a statement contradicting that there it is necessary for every home to be equipped with a fibre-optic line. It bases this on a hypothesis that in the future, nearly every UK home could have 50Mbit/s broadband. It is common knowledge that Ofcom has the technology and therefore, the capability to make this happen. The most important element is that homes should be near enough to an exchange, to ensure that signal will be less degraded. This will also mean that the internet will be faster, as there will be minimal packet loss. At the moment, only 18% of UK homes are in close proximity to an exchange (within 2km). Ofcom believes that it could accelerate the process, by moving all the upstream modem in current exchanges to the cabinet that exists on most roads. This will achieve the goal of getting faster broadband UK speeds. This will definitely be not only difficult, but also very expensive. You have to consider that there are far more street cabinets than available exchanges. It will take a great amount of work, and a very considerable length of time to accomplish it. It appears as if Ofcom had based its assertion on a situation where everything was just ideal For instance, all of the exchanges were in the right place, and everything would work as planned. However, in reality, we will probably be dreaming about this happening for another two years.
