Steven Gerrard and Glen Johnson can put club cares behind them at World Cup
May 27th, 2010 by admin
Liverpool are undoubtedly one of the country’s most iconic football clubs, and some of the club’s most celebrated names have played significant roles in England’s World Cup story. Steven Gerrard, Glen Johnson and Jamie Carragher were named in Fabio Capello’s 30-man provisional squad for South Africa, and all are expected to make it on to the plane.
All three will thus have the chance to emulate Kop legend Roger Hunt, who was instrumental in the Three Lions’ 1966 World Cup campaign. The striker played in all six of England’s matches, scoring three times on the way to the final. Interestingly, it’s often claimed that Hunt would have put the ball in the net had Hurst’s controversial goal been awarded by linesman Tofik Bakhramov.
It has been a season to forget at Anfield, and Gerrard, Carragher and Johnson will all be looking to end on a high at the World Cup.
