Sarkozy’s Statement- an attack on Islamic Clothing, or something more sinister?
July 5th, 2009 by admin
French President Nicolas Sarkozy recently called for a ban on the ‘burqa’. He argues that the burqa is a symbol of subjugation of the woman and its growth in Western societies should be stopped. It is strange how politicians in the West love to raise this issue even though very few Muslim women who wear Islamic Clothing also wear the burqa. Also such statements fly in the face of the notion of ‘individual freedom’, which is supposed to be a pillar of democracy and according to which a woman should have the right to wear the burqa if she wanted to.
Muslims are all for participation and dialogue, including Muslim women- many of whom wear Islamic clothing while they fully participate as law abiding, successful professional working women in society; however integration, they argue, cannot happen at the expense of their Islamic beliefs and values.
