Dog training books

Tonight’s class begins with the "sit" command. "Let’s start with 15 seconds andwork up to 30," the trainer says. Gradually increase the sitting to 60 seconds.

There are a few howls of protest from the class wags, but the sit begins. Butts lower to the floor. When the dog begins to "break," or show signs of restlessness, the owner is instructed to pull gently on the leash and reward the dog when it returns to a sit - just like it says in the good dog training books.

Results are mixed. Tiffany the spaniel seems to be a classic case of the tail wagging the dog. Brodie, a boxer with a James Dean personality, is sent to the Time Out room until his attitude improves. Soon, however, most of the 15 dogs in the class are sitting pretty.
