Body Glove Swimwear for Triathlons

This summer I will be competing in my very first triathlon, and I am looking for the proper attire to wear in such an event. It seems like every person I ask has a different type of outfit they wear. I have seen that Body Glove Swimwear does make a wet suit specifically for triathlons, but I am not sure if I even need a wet suit. I have a friend who said she just wears a swimsuit with running shorts over top, and then she adds a tank top when she gets out of the water. I would think that would be uncomfortable, but I am the new one to the sport so I have no idea.
