One Way for Everyone

Is there only one way for everyone to lose weight? What if diet and exercise did not help everyone? Of course I am not saying that it should not be done, but what if some people have other conditions that prevent them from losing weight despite their exercise and eating habits? If I try to find a book on how to burn fat how will I know that it will work for me? Is there one way to burn it that works for everyone? I have never checked into a fitness book before. Does it often give different technique on how to accomplish goals through a variety of choices?
