New Antibiotics Used in Cataract Surgery

A new treatment for Cataract Surgery patients seems to be taking effect. It appears that patients who are treated with the antibiotic moxifloxacin 0.5% before undergoing cataract surgery have a reduction of pupil size which is greater than that when patients use gatifloxacin 0.3% before undergoing surgery, but researchers still find no difference in conjuctival hyperaemia, pain, or ocular irritation with either medication.
A recent study of 60 patients was done where they received the antibiotic prophylaxis before receiving surgery. In the 60 patients there was a significant reduction in the pupil eyes in those that received moxifloxacin. The idea is that the reduction in pupil sice can benefit the outcome of the surgery. The goal is to provide antimicrobial results so that oclular penetration can be tolerated well and cause fewer side effects.
