Opinion On “Big Health”

Amy, you’re better off under the Obama plan.
I was getting my health and physical fitness articles insurance through a writers’ organization and I wrote articles for their newsletters on our insurance options.
New York State regulations tend to even out the costs of insurance. Everyone in a group can get insurance, including those who are sick, and as a result your premiums are higher, but you’re guaranteed some kind of insurance. So you’ve always been paying for those who are seriously ill. No difference.
The Obama health plan — inadequate though it is — will make it easier for you as a struggling writer to get health insurance. The insurance companies will be required to issue you a policy, even after you get sick. The federal government will subsidize your premiums if your income is too low for you to afford it.
It will be particularly significant for struggling writers in states other than New York, where people who were chronically ill, or simply old, couldn’t get insurance at any affordable price, or at all.
People who had insurance through their employers, and lost their jobs, were offered insurance at premiums of $1,000 or more a month. In Connecticut, one woman who had had breast cancer a few years ago couldn’t get insurance at all. In other states, people in their 50s couldn’t get insurance.
