What is the deal with secured credit?

I was wondering who uses secured credit. Do people really do this? I thought the point of having credit was to have a limit that did not expect you to pay in full. I guess I was wrong. I do kind of like the idea of being able to set my own credit limits with secured credit cards, but I just can not afford to put down a bunch of money to obtain credit. I guess that is the point, it keeps you from making a lot of mistakes that can be made with regular credit cards. I will be looking into getting one as soon as I can put down the deposit.
