Why is body jewellery worn on third finger left hand?

There are many proffered reasons why the third finger is used for body jewelry to represent marriage. One Chinese version is my favourite whereby they ask you to put your finger tips and thumb tips together with the exception of you middle finger. Thumb represents your parents, first finger your siblings, small finger you children and third finger your marriage.
