Before the 18th century struck, pocket watches were made of metal parts but had no effective form of lubrication. They were therefore highly unreliable and were in need of constant repair. In the 18th century watches began to improve in performance with the introduction of oil to the mechanisms. This not only stopped parts from seizing up, but also stopped them from rotting. This greatly improved accuracy and popularity as beforehand they were not considered seriously enough to make it into the main shopping centres around the world, but after some careful and unique changes that where made, eventuallyt they made it into the shops and where available for us all to buy.
