If you are looking for a family outing that is unlike anything you’ve ever experienced, you might want to think about taking a trip toward Freemont, Maine, where you can visit a rather unique site. Hidden amid the green forests and gushing streams is a real desert. It was once a part of arable farmland (200 years ago), the Desert Dunes of Maine now encompasses more than 300 acres.Visitors will learn about the geology of the area as well as take a 30-minute tram tour around the perimeter of the desert. In addition, visitors will find plenty of hiking trails in the area, including trails that are in the surrounding woods rather than in the desert. You can also visit the Tuttle Barn, the only original building of the Tuttle Farm left on the land. The Tuttle family owned the land before it turned into a desert.Don’t forget to check out the sand designs and sand paintings, as well as see what the gift shop has to offer. You may even want to have a picnic on site – there are plenty of facilities available. If you are camping, you might want to spend a night or two in the nearby Desert Dunes of Maine Campground
